On the spectrum, Autism and Fragile X: Suggestions for a triple combination

I'm working with a young boy with fragile X
who shares many of the traits and "issues" that autistic
children exhibit

I made wonderful progress in a 5 session in one week introduction
with him
but was a bit "miffed" at myself for not producing the "miracles"
I see in cerebral palsy and children with "learning disabilities."

However, here is what his wonderful, caring grandmother had to
say about the lesson:
"I want you to know that I witnessed in your office a powerful tool that filled my heart with hope. You demonstrated an accepting-love-filled interaction that produced a security in my grandson and enabled him to explore and to feel good and sure about himself. I see a great potential in your technique for Rafael’s development.
Thank you,
Maria"

I talked to Michelle Bensky, who is one of the parents
giving a glowing testimonial at the autistic children
segment of the Anat Baniel site.
See: Anat Baniel Special Needs Children, Autism page

Michelle is also, like me, a ABM practitioner with training
at the Mastery Level for special needs children.
Unlike me, she is a parent of an autistic child. His name is Isaac,
and she is rightfully proud of the tremendous improvement Isaac has made.

With her help,
here is my beginning offerings of what could
be an extremely powerful triple combination
of forces
to help your helping of your child
to the best of her or his ability for lifelong improvement:

The three are:
One: The Anat Baniel Method
Two: The Son Rise Program
Three: Diet shifts, particularly the GAPs diet

ONE: THE ANAT BANIEL METHOD

See Anat Baniel Method, Children's Page
This is the primary tool in all the world for
"transforming a life, by connecting with the brain."

Your child can learn.
The rate we don't know.
at THEIR LEVEL AND THEIR SPEED
TO BECOME ALL THEY CAN BECOME

As Michelle says: "
"miracles" can be slower with kids on the spectrum than with kids whose challenges are mostly physical, AND the ABM work helps speed the learning up for these kids by improving their brains, and learning capacity. They have big challenges, and they become big learners.

I do think that if we want kids on the autistic spectrum to join our world we need to help them. If they could, they would!"

a. PT and OT are often about behavior
and / or
"getting it right"
and / or
"stimulation"

but not: information.
Often they are counterproductive to this work.

Once Michelle discovered ABM, she took Isaac off all
PT, and kept him on some OT

It seems that we must all go slowly
and carefully, looking for the professional help
that can honor ABM's commitment to
slow,
to subtle (less force)
to variation
to increasing learning
and not frustrating the child
by requiring that darned old:
"here, just try harder to do what
you don't know how to do,"

which is so human an effort,
we all want the best for the children,
and yet
can be so harmful to their attitude
toward anyone trying to "help" them

So we need to "pick and choose" the help,
that can really "help" with the aim of
"transforming a life, by awakening the brain."

b. The core of the ABM work is the increasing
of intelligence.
Increasing awareness of differences.
Increasing awareness of connections.

The measure of intelligence is an increasing
ability
to perceive differences.

again: The measure of intelligence
is the increasing of perception of differences.

Whether you help you child know the difference between
their big toe and their little toe
or their thumb and their big toe
or a foot with a shoe on and a foot with a shoe off
or standing on the right foot
vs standing on the left foot
or screaming softly, vs loudly,
screaming musically vs screaming harshly

Any difference
and if noticed
if AWARENESS OF DIFFERENCES IS AWAKENED
then INTELLIGENCE IS INCREASED

Understanding this as primary, is one of the core
reasons the Anat Baniel Method is so effective with children,
or anyone for that matter.

Anat's book is of great help in this.

c. Michelle and I both agree that ABA
because it treats autism as a "behavior disorder"
is good if you want a "well trained" being, as opposed to
a learning and intelligent being.

See below, the link to Son Rise's take on ABA
and their principles.

For additional input about the Anat Baniel Method,
and suggestions of activities, the
Special Needs Children's Page of My Website,
has a list of 12 suggestions at the end.

To quickly get to an essence of Anat's work,
you might want to click on Possibilities: A Revolutionary Approach for Transforming the Lives of Children with Special Needs,

to receive a 7 page
pdf about Slow, Subtle and Variation,
that you can either read on your computer, or print up for study.

P.S.
(If you don't have an ABM practitioner nearby, look for a Feldenkrais practitioner.
They usually aren't as highly trained in special needs children,
but they have fantastic skills compared to the "average" OT, PT, chiropractic, massage therapy
and so on)

TWO: INVOLVE YOUR CHILD
AT HOME
AS MUCH AS YOU CAN IN THE APPROACHES RECOMMEND
IN THE
SON RISE
PROGRAM

The Son Rise program
is
named from the very inspiring book of the same name
which is about two parents who rescued their child
from autism, by means of "joining"
and "slight improvement"
and "total acceptance"

Here's a link to the book
Son Rise

Here's a link to the Principles of the Son Rise program

Short version:

1. Your child's potential is limitless

 2.

Autism is not a behavioral disorder:

it is a relational, interactional disorder

 3,

Motivation, not repetition, holds the key to all learning

4

Your child's "stimming" behaviors have important meaning and value

5

The parent is the child's best resource

6

Your child can progress in the right environment.

7

Parents and professionals are most effective when they feel comfortable with their child, optimistic about their child's capabilities and hopeful about their child's future

where the Son Rise program
like the Anat Baniel program
finds the ABA approach so limiting
ABA vs Son Rise
* Includes a number of short videos written by the formerly autistic "son" in Son Rise, who is now a main force behind this form of autistic help.

THREE:
CHANGE THE DIET
Michelle recommends this
I recommend this
My friend Jon Martinez in Ohio
also an ABM for special needs children master
who has a special needs daughter got
huge shifts by adding diet changes
to the ABM work

Jon recommends the GAPS
DIET
And I do too

Basically:
no grains
no sugars, except small amounts of honey and fruit (at first,
then more honey and fruit, but no sugar, fake sugar like aspermante
no agave)
but stevia yes

No grains
no preservatives
if at all possible grass fed meat and poulty

No soy

No pasteurized milk products,
except yogurt and keffir

Lots of fish, meat, vegetables

vegetables
if at all possible organic
or grow your own

fermented foods and/ or probiotics

Check it out  via
The Gaps Diet

The video at the bottom of this page is wonderful,
watch it several times. It could change everything.
http://www.gutandpsychologysyndrome.com/gaps-diet/

Three and a half:
I strongly recommend getting Green Smoothies
into your life
and that of your child.

If you want any more information,
on diet ideas less than the total GAPS
program
at the food page of my website (http://4brainfitness.com)
I have my summary of what I've learned over the years:
FOOD AND HEALTH PAGE FROM MY WEBSITE

To summarize:

Find an ABM practitioner
and incorporate in your life
the principles of
Learning = the Perception of Differences

Two: involve your child in the Son Rise program:
Joining
Increasing interactivity
Creating slight and joyful variation
Total Acceptance (think how you feel when not totally accepted for who
you are
Right Now)

Three:
Shift Diet
to a minimum of, I'd suggest:
no sugars, fructose, artificial or corn sweeteneres
no flour products
no pasteurized dairy

Best of luck:
This is "hard"
and You, You, You
dear parent
are already an amazing person
and will keep getting better and better
as you apply these ideas

And:
love yourself
totally,
as you are RIGHT NOW

GOOD
